Following the failure of a modillion at fourth floor level, AKS Ward was appointed by Selfridges to investigate the cause and design, and project manage the remedial work. The remedial action initially consisted of erecting a scaffold propped off the first floor cill and cantilevered off the roof.
This impressive scaffold allowed unobstructed access to the shop and allowed Selfridges to increase their turnover over the 12 months it was in place.
AKS Ward project managed the contract to investigate the construction and to design the remedial work at the same time. This was possible using a re-measurement contract based on a similar project and tendered rates. The use of this form of contract saved six months and minimized the disruption to Selfridges. The remedial work extended the cathodic protection and supported the large cornice stones off cantilevered steels.
