Construction of a new integrated municipal and academic building incorporating library facilities, teaching rooms, art studios, a lecture theatre, public galleries, café and public square.
The building comprises four storeys plus a part basement for the lecture theatre. The superstructure is an in-situ reinforced concrete framed structure up to third floor level, comprising 10.6m of clear span post-tensioned floor slab with exposed concrete soffits for thermal mass.
The lecture theatre, located at the southern end of the building, is a double storey room between lower ground and first floor level. This room is unobstructed by columns with a transfer slab over supporting three-storey columns above.
A steel-framed roof structure is sprung off the third floor slab level. The columns on the east elevation are supported on the third floor level slab edge, which cantilevers 2.5m, thus creating an overhang at third floor level.
