AKSWard is working on a new sixth form centre for Epsom College in Surrey. The site sits within the green belt, at the edge of the original listed Victorian school building. The new three storey building replaces pre-existing poor-quality facilities housing the college’s six form. The design incorporates a 190-seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, a room for quiet study, discussion pods, career centre, screening room, and café; and caters for the current cohort of 340 sixth form pupils.
Epsom College building is of a steel frame design with precast concrete floors, organised around two staircase cores. The second floor classroom and lecture theatre ceilings follow the profile of the double duopitch roof: to achieve this the structural design required these elements to be framed in steel with timber infill rafters. The slope of the site required the building to be partially set into the ground requiring retaining walls to be incorporated within the wall construction. The building was modelled in 3D using Revit to aid coordination and allow clash detection.
This project is part of our strategic partnership Corde between ADP Architecture, KJ Tait Engineers and AKSWard Limited.
